HISTORY
Everyone has a beginning. Ours started in April of 1960 in the very same building we are in today. The original owners, Nat Golden and T. Austin Fowler, opened Golden-Fowler Home Furnishings using an 80-by-140 foot space. The store carried nationally advertised lines of merchandise including a complete stock of furniture and carpet for the home. The styles that were featured at the time were Modern and Early American. In 1968, Mr. Fowler sold his share of the business to Mr. Golden, and in 1972, the business was taken over by Golden’s son Bill.

In 1962 and 1964 respectively, two young gentlemen by the names of Ronald LaForest and John Breithaupt were hired on at Golden-Fowler as part-time delivery personnel. Ron was a 1957 graduate of Traverse City Saint Francis High School, and John was a 1962 graduate of St. Francis as well. The two of them eventually worked their way to the warehouse, then to the sales floor, and then into management. Finally, in May of 1986, Ron and John bought Golden-Fowler from Bill Golden.

Today the store is still owned an operated by Ron and John, plus a full professional staff. We have grown from 8,500 square feet to 30,000 square feet with a warehouse. We sell a full range of top name brand merchandise for the living room, dining room, bedroom, home office, or any room in your home. We are now the largest and only Flexsteel Super Gallery in Northern Michigan, and we sell Flexsteel exclusively in Traverse City. Known as the "Custom Order Experts", we offer thousands of top quality fabrics to choose from, including the popular Robert Allen Fabrics. At Golden-Fowler, we want you to have the best furniture buying experience with no pressure or hassles. Just let us help you to determine what you want, and we’ll be there to make it happen!
